Project 08
Title: I’ve Got a Big Head! What About You?

Curricular connections: 
Technology, Art/Design, Social Studies, Language Arts, etc

Synopsis: 
Be a show off! Use art and computer media to show others your hidden talents and interests. 

Key Questions:

What are the main parts of our heads? What is symmetry? What is balance?
What do you like to do? What makes you different from/the same as your peers? 
Can people from different places with different interests still be friends?

Materials:
Oral history, Digital Camera, Computer, Art materials (paper, pencils, markers, paints)

Activities: 
Each student draws a head and shoulder self portrait on paper. Each draws a circle of interests around the portrait.
Following lesson on facial features and symmetry, each student draws self portrait again.
Discuss key questions with class. Compare first and second portraits. What has changed?
Divide class into groups. Half will go to computer. Half will do art. Later they switch.
Students at computer take digital self portrait, then import digital picture into painting program.
Students at computer erase digital picture background and replace with image reflecting interests.
Students at art tables create wearable masks made from brown paper grocery bags, paint, etc.
Students accessorize bag masks with 3 D decorations. 
Be sure to present a variety of topical words to students at beginning and end of class. 
End with discussion and oral presentations. 


Variations: Use papier mache for masks.
