Evaluation Via Critiques

Most of my students enter the art room believing that they can't draw or paint. Some have never even had the opportunity to hold a paintbrush! If they haven't had exposure to art media, why are most convinced they can't create art?  My task as a teacher is to break through assumptions about what art is and who can make art.  The process is simple: I assign projects in a variety of media, often connecting traditional art media with a computer based task. As we work, I introduce information relevant to the assigned tasks.  Each classroom experience is designed to enhance self awareness and promote a  positive self image. When each project is complete,  we evaluate the experience and results via a guided discussion called a critique.
